The ClassicThe original text

「味辛温。主咳逆,头痛脑动,百节拘挛,风湿痹痛,死肌。久服明目,利九窍,轻身长年。」

Pungent in flavor, warm. It treats cough with counterflow, headache and stirring of the brain, cramping of the hundred joints, wind-damp blockage pain, and deadened flesh. Taken over a long time, it brightens the eyes, frees the nine orifices, lightens the body and lengthens the years.

RootBro's note — 'Opens the nine orifices' is the most vivid description of xixin. Blocked nose, tinnitus, phlegm-rheum obstruction — xixin's pungent dispersing power can punch through every passage. Mahuang Fuzi Xixin Tang is the precision combination for Shaoyin catching cold.

Key constituents asarone-type compounds and methyleugenol have potent local-anesthetic and anti-inflammatory actions and dilate the bronchi, acting directly on the respiratory mucosa.
Methyleugenol · 甲基丁香酚
Na⁺ channel blockade → local anesthesia (pain relief). β₂ receptor agonism → bronchodilation (opening the passages). Aristolochic acid analogues (AAI) are controlled in modern processing — dosage must stay under 3 g.
The logic of xixin in 'Shaoyin cold damage': Shaoyin yang deficiency combined with exterior cold — mahuang alone, forcing sweat, would injure the yang; fuzi alone, warming yang, cannot release the exterior. Xixin stands in the middle: it helps mahuang open the exterior and helps fuzi warm the interior — the 'bridge' of this three-herb combination.
